Judging Philosophy:

As a product of the Texas OAP contest system, I understand and am mindful that at every level and at every contest, there are advancing and non-advancing schools. As a student, sitting in an auditorium chair at the end of a very long day, at the end of a very long rehearsal process, the last thing I wanted was to be be torn apart by a critic judge that didn't know that we didn't own an entire OAP set, that our lights were two light switches that turned on 3 bare bulbs a piece and that we rehearsed after school whenever it could be fit in because we shared space and rehearsal time with off season athletics.

It is from this place, that I critique students and directors. My belief is that it does not matter if the students were part of an advancing production or not, every student should leave OAP contest feeling encouraged and with a belief in themselves and in the system and with confidence to get up on stage again.

This does not mean that I will not offer constructive feedback, but I pride myself on building up, not tearing down students and directors.

What do I look for in a quality OAP?

The complete picture. I want all areas from acting to technical aspects to make a strong and cohesive whole. More importantly, if you choose to use a more technical approach to design, you pull it off. Set and lighting design choices must be script driven and "work." I would rather see a bare stage with little lighting effects and solid acting and direction than poor acting and directing that is hidden with a heavy stage and "fancy" lights and sound.

Interested in having me as your judge? I am happy to judge festivals, middle school/junior high productions and OAP's in all of the A categories!
